When Democracy Was A Baby
I’ve vacillated, these past few weeks, between spirit-crashing despair and finger-stiffening rage.
Finally I’ve resolved it in my head, I think, that this too, this whole mess, is democracy.
And that what nobody warned us is that when democracy is a baby, it cries a lot, it poops a lot, it cannot feed itself, and it demands round the clock attention.
But it’s our baby, and no one else’s. And no one else is going to grow it up but us.
I read something that someone by the name Abbie Hoffman said:
Democracy is not something you believe in or a place to hang your hat, but it's something you do. You participate. If you stop doing it, democracy crumbles.
I needed to be reminded of that today, and probably even tomorrow. Make that a pill a day for the next couple of weeks still.
Because sometimes you just want it to work. And it bugs you no end that it doesn't.
Why can’t democracy just grow up and be a woman?
2 Other Thoughts:
Why not a man?
Ama men are babies? LOLOLOL
Milonare, you said it, I didn't :-).
Just kidding.
I like to insert woman where I can because... I can.
And because most folk would naturally say grow up and be a man and therefore I ask myself, why not a woman?
So if Democracy grows up to be a good solid man, good on it as well.
