So, Barack Obama
He got me with “Dreams From My Father.” It was hard to believe the parts about Kenya were written by someone who’d not been brought up in Kenya. So authentic. Neither raw nor overdone. Just right. I loved him then. And then, "Audacity of Hope" sealed the deal. I like.
Last June, I remember being in a car in Johannesburg, driving from point A to point B. There were four of us, from four different countries, two Africans two non-Africans. From a discussion on the global economic climate, we segued into a discussion about who could would might be the next US President. Hillary Clinton got a fair amount of airtime. We tossed pluses and minuses back and forth. Rudi Giulliani also came under scrutiny. I attempted to insert Barack Obama into the conversation. Everybody laughed. I mean, chortled. Nobody else in the car thought he was worth considering.
In the next couple of weeks, at least three of us will get together again. I can’t wait.
Also, I’m ‘up to here’ with Kenya. Enough. I’m off to bury my head in the sand. DO NOT DISTURB.
Just one more thing: ahem, has anyone else noticed that drought has checked in? Mom told me some weeks ago the harvest was very poor this year, and that set off the first warning bells for me. But of course there's plenty of news jostling for mind space so I stashed that away absentmindedly. Then yesterday, there were cattle being herded along Mbagathi Way. That's usually a sign that there's trouble in the land.
4 Other Thoughts:
Our farming was already thrown off with all this chaos and now there is a drought in the air. It seems when it cant get any worse a new curve ball is thrown at us.
Yes Obama has proven to be the dark horse that no-one expected to get this far.
I do think a short break from the Kenyan drama is a good thing because it can lead to depression if you think about it too much.
Mr. Obama indeed has become a symbol for hope for a helluva lot of people. The flack I copped online and off for even a critique of him is admirable; he really means something to a helluva lot of people. As for me, I haven't seen much of his speaking but the response he gave to the Just words criticism....http://youtube.com/watch?v=7ffwY74XbS4
....this brother can speak!
Is God testing us. Drought? Now?!
It seems our Kenyan troubles are far from over as drought is looming. Very soon we will be asking for food aid from the very same people we have told to keep off our affairs!
I have a wonderful feeling watching Obama's star rising higher and higher than anybody thought it would. Go Barrack!
Its great to hear you're also excited about Obama. Have you met up again with those three friends you mentioned yet?
People around the world are getting excited about Senator Obama. Anecodatal reports and polls we've seen in Japan, Iraq, Brazil, South Africa, Germany etc. all show massive support for him.
Not all his policies are perfect, and he's clearly had to make some compromises to become "electable" (on Israel for example), but anyone like you who has read his books recognises that he's driven be solid principles.
Come see what other people are saying at http://www.theworldwantsobama.org and write something on our Facebook discussion page.
Hey have you tried the "Senator" Obama beer made in Kenya?
